Game no Kandzume English Translation Patches
(AKA Game Can or Games Can)
(Phantasy Star II Text Adventures only)

This two-volume collection includes the following translated games (volume number in parentheses):

Fatal Labyrinth (2) (*)
Phantasy Star II: Amia's Adventure (1)
Phantasy Star II: Anne's Adventure (2)
Phantasy Star II: Eusis's Adventure (1)
Phantasy Star II: Huey's Adventure (1)
Phantasy Star II: Kinds's Adventure (2)
Phantasy Star II: Nei's    Adventure (2)
Phantasy Star II: Rudger's Adventure (2)
Phantasy Star II: Shilka's Adventure (1)

(*) "Translated" in the sense that it is now playable in English. It is a port of Fatal Labyrinth for the Genesis, which is a dual-language game.

There are numerous other small games on each disc, none of which have been translated nor are there any plans to do so.

All the best games are in the second volume, with Kinds's Adventure being the greatest of them all.

Why would I want to play these games instead of or in addition to the SegaNet versions?

  • Emulators suck -- SegaCD games can be played on original hardware with only a CD burner.
  • Some of the games are a bit easier than their SegaNet counterparts.
  • The MegaCD versions often have improvements and fewer bugs.
  • You enjoy the thrill of the more challenging emulator configuration and patching process.

Other differences between the SegaNet and MegaCD incarnations of these games:

  • The title music is a CD track in the MegaCD versions whereas the SegaNet games use synthesized music exclusively.
  • In some cases the in-game music was modified (e.g. Anne's battle theme, Rudger's tempo).
  • Subtle graphical variations (e.g. Amia's title screen).
  • Although minor script discrepancies between the versions were generally unified, certain major changes were left intact. Thus the textual part of the adventure is slightly different for some of the games, other changes notwithstanding.

For what it's worth, I consider the MegaCD editions to be the definitive versions, although there are some cases where I still prefer the SegaNet games.
